Eliminate boot menu on startup

When I turn on my PC I always get the Windows 98 bootup menu. If I select option one (normal), the computer starts up in the usual way. What might I have done to cause this change in the way it starts up? Can I restore the startup routine to normal?

Do you have Tweak UI installed in your Control Panel, or have you been playing with a similar tool in a utility package? These tools have an option that lets you choose to have the boot menu displayed each startup. If you have Tweak UI, start it, select the Boot tab, clear the 'Always show boot menu' option in the Boot Menu panel, then click ok. You can download Tweak UI from PC Advisor's Download Directory.

To clear this option without using Tweak UI requires you to carry out a potentially dangerous procedure that, if done incorrectly, could stop your system from booting altogether.

Remember to take a backup first, then open a command prompt and execute the following commands:

attrib -s -h -r msdos.sys
notepad msdos.sys

When Notepad opens, look for two lines beginning 'BootMenu' and 'BootMenu Delay' in the file (they will probably be at the end) and delete them. Save the file and close Notepad. Then execute the command:

attrib +s +h +r msdos.sys

Close the command prompt and restart the computer.
